This evening in Alghero will be completed the first part of Sardinia Film Festival, an international film award dedicated to shorts. At 21h00, in the historical location of Lo Quarter, will be announced the winners of four sections: 'Italian & International Fiction','International Documentary','School' and 'Vetrina Sardegna'.
For five days, under the artistic direction of Carlo Dessì, the XII edition of the festival screened some fifty works in original language with Italian subtitles. Three masterclasses were also organised: with producer Gianluca Arcopinto, DoP Beppe Lanci (from Centro sperimentale di cinematografia in Rome) and finally, yesterday, with Hungarian director Béla Tarr, with screening of his works 'Pròlogus' and 'Werckmeister Harmonies'.
This year, SFF operates in partnership with ESFF (Edinburgh) and Fastnet Film Festival (Schull), from which a selection of non-competing works has been screened. Our collaborator was particularly impressed by two documentaries: 'Spike' by Ian Tierney (2016) and Stephen James Smith // My Ireland' by Myles O'Reily (Ireland 2016).
Created in 2006, the Sardinia Film Festival receives each year about 1200 shorts from around the world; since 2011, it has set up the first Mediateca del Corto della Sardegna', which hosts all the shorts that participated in the SFF (fact-sheets available on-line). The SFF activated agreements with various institutions, including the Academy of Fine Arts 'Mario Sironi' in Sassari, allowing the attribution of credits to students volunteering during the festival.
Sardinia Film Festival will continue in 2017 in two different locations: August 17-19 in Villanova Monteleone (for the 'Italian Documentary' section) and from 31 August to 2 September in Bosa ('Animation' section).
