Peter von Bagh

Peter von Bagh (1943–2014) was a cinema historian, director, screenwriter, award-winning non-fiction writer, radio producer and the editor of the Filmihullu magazine. Since the beginning in 1986 he has been Director of the Midnight Sun Film Festival, and since 2001 he has worked as the Artistic Director of Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna. He was a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004. He has written more than 30 books and directed 45 television documentaries, including TV series. In Sodankula Forever (2010), Peter von Bagh records twenty-five years of conversations with directors, screenwriters and directors of photography during the Midnight Sun Film Festival morning sessions. His last non-fiction work is Sosialismi (2014): as Olaf Möller articulated, “von Bagh, maybe the truest of all Benjamin’ians in modern cinema, shows how socialism and cinema—all of cinema, be it documentary, be it fiction—are one, and [...] that cinema and socialism will always be there [...].”
